Published: Saturday, Mar. 24, 2012 - 1:00 am

Japan and Turkey have reached a broad agreement on nuclear cooperation, the Foreign Ministry said.

The agreement marks the first substantial accord on nuclear cooperation since the outbreak of the crisis at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant.

Toshiba Corp. is in the running to export its technology and safety know-how for a nuclear power plant project in Turkey.

The governments will finalize the wording of the agreement later.

The agreement mainly regulates nuclear technology in military use and its transfer to third-party countries.

The government began negotiations with Turkey in January last year. But the negotiations had been suspended after the crisis at the Fukushima power plant.

The Turkish government plans to build a nuclear power plant in the Black Sea city of Sinop with plans to begin operations around 2020.
